Adverse Universe, 2026


Adverse Universe is a recent series of spray paintings developed in Kalman Pool’s studio in Buji Old Street, Shenzhen, on the edge of a dense urban village. The works do not directly depict this environment, but inherit its logic of compression, overlap, survival, and mutation.

Across the canvases, eyes, mouth-like organs, serrated structures, feather-like forms, translucent bodies, and energetic trajectories emerge as unstable life-forms generated under pressure. Through the speed, mist, and irreversibility of spray paint, the paintings construct living systems shaped by insomnia, anxiety, fear, anger, and the desire to continue creating despite instability.

Rather than escaping reality, Adverse Universe builds another survival system from within it: images shaped by chaos, yet continually insisting on growth.
